About this Photo

The S.S. Eastland was a passenger ship based in Chicago and used for tours. On 24 July 1915 the ship rolled over while tied to a dock in the Chicago River. A total of 845 passengers and crew were killed in what was to become the largest loss of life disaster from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes.

Following the disaster, the Eastland was salvaged and sold to the United States Navy. After restorations and modifications the Eastland was designated as a gunboat and renamed the USS Wilmette. She was used primarily as a training vessel on the Great Lakes and was scrapped following World War II.

Photo of the USS Lydonia docked in Chicago Illinois. Photo dates to around 1912. USS Lydonia (SP-700) was a 497 gross ton yacht acquired by the U.S. Navy during World War I. She was outfitted as a patrol craft and spent most of the war based out of Gibraltar, escorting and protecting Allied ships in the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic Ocean coast of Europe. Post-war she was transferred to the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey as USCGS Lydonia (CS-302).

This hotel was built specifically to accommodate the Columbian Exposition of 1893. The hotel was demolished following World War II. This old photo dates to between 1900 and 1910. About the Chicago Beach Hotel The Chicago Beach Hotel was located in the Indian Village neighborhood of the Kenwood community area of Chicago, Illinois, on the property that currently houses Regents Park. The building extended to Lake Michigan. Many Chicagoans of high social standing became residents and members. The building had private access to the beach until 1915 when the city created an adjacent bathhouse. During World War II it was commandeered by the military and served as Gardiner General Hospital. It was demolished following the war.

You have freight cars with cargo being qued up to be loaded on boats. Nice looking steamboat docked on the pier next to a warehouse. About the Chicago Beach Hotel

Photo of the Victoria Hotel exterior in Chicago, IL. This building, located on the corner of Michigan and Van Buren, was originally called the "Beaurivage", and was built in 1878. It was one of the first "French Flat" buildings in the city, essentially luxury apartments. It burned in 1882 and was rebuilt. In 1892 it was remodeled into the Victoria Hotel. It was demolished in 1908. This old photo dates to around 1900.

Photo of the Masonic Temple building in Chicago, IL. The Masonic Temple Building was a skyscraper built in Chicago, Illinois in 1892. Designed by the firm of Burnham and Root and built at the northeast corner of Randolph and State Streets, the building rose 22 stories. When the clock tower was removed from the 1885 Board of Trade Building in 1895, the Masonic Temple became the tallest in the city. In 1939, the Masonic Temple was demolished, in part due to its poor internal services, but also due to the construction of the new State Street subway, which would have necessitated expensive foundation retrofitting.
