Mordecai Peter Centennial Brown (October 19, 1876 - February 14, 1948), nicknamed "Three Finger" or "Miner", was an American Major League Baseball pitcher at the turn of the 20th century. Due to a farm-machinery accident in his youth, Brown lost parts of two fingers on his right hand and eventually acquired his nickname as a result. Overcoming this handicap and turning it to his advantage, he became one of the elite pitchers of his era.

Brown was born in Nyesville, Indiana. He was also known as "Miner", having worked in western Indiana coal mines for a while before beginning his professional baseball career. Nicknames like "Miner" and "Three Finger" (or sometimes "Three-Fingered") were headline writers' inventions. To fans and friends he was probably best known as "Brownie".

In his later years, Brown was plagued by diabetes and then by the effects of a stroke. He died in 1948, and news of his passing reminded sportswriters of his past achievements. He was selected posthumously to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1949.

In 1999, 83 years after his last game and 51 years after his death, he was named as a finalist to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

Frank Leroy Chance (September 9, 1876 – September 15, 1924) was a Major League Baseball player at the turn of the 20th century. Performing the roles of first baseman and manager, Chance led the Chicago Cubs to four National League championships in the span of five years (1906-1910) and earned the nickname "The Peerless Leader". He was elected to the baseball Hall of Fame in 1946.

James Patrick Archer (May 13, 1883 – March 29, 1958) was an Irish-born catcher in Major League Baseball who spent nearly his entire career with four National League teams, primarily the Chicago Cubs, for whom he played from 1909 to 1917. Born in Dublin, he also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1904, the American League's Detroit Tigers in 1907, and the Pirates, Brooklyn Robins and Cincinnati Reds in 1918. As a catcher, he could remain squatting and still throw out runners attempting to steal second base due to his unique arm strength, which became his trademark, acquired from the healing of burns that shortened his muscles after an industrial accident in which Archer fell into a vat of boiling sap at the age of 19.

He was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Blackburne made an unusual and valuable contribution to baseball when he discovered a special use for the clay from the Delaware River to take the shine off of baseballs before each game. At the time, the mid-1930s, baseball teams used a variety of substances to rub baseballs: tobacco juice, shoe polish, dirt from the baseball field or a combination, but nothing they tried gave the balls the right look or feel. Blackburne searched for the perfect rubbing compound until one day, according to legend, he found mud he liked in a secret tributary of the Delaware River, near Palmyra, New Jersey where he lived most of his life. He marketed his idea, and by 1938, he was supplying the mud to all American League teams; because Blackburne was a die-hard American League fan, he refused to sell the mud to National League teams until the mid-1950s. Since then, every major and minor league team has used only his product. One container, a little more than 16 ounces, will usually last a season. The process of creating the mud was featured in a pilot episode of the television show Dirty Jobs on the Discovery Channel.Blackburne's contribution to the game has earned him a mention in the Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, New York.

Theodore Harrison (Ted) Easterly (April 20, 1885 – July 6, 1951) was a catcher in Major League Baseball who played for the Cleveland Naps (1909–1912), Chicago White Sox (1912–1913) and Kansas City Packers (1914–1915). Easterly batted left-handed and threw right-handed. He was born in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Easterly was a good contact hitter who batted over .300 four times. From 1910 to 1912, he collected three consecutive .300 seasons with a high .324 in 1911 and led the American League with 11 pinch-hits in 1912. He jumped to the Federal League in 1914 and ended the season third in the batting race with a 335 average. A good defensive player with a solid throwing arm, he also served as a backup right fielder.

In a seven-season career, Easterly was a .300 hitter with eight home runs and 261 RBI in 706 games played.

Henry Zimmerman (February 9, 1887 - March 14, 1969), known as "Heinie" or "The Great Zim," was a Major League Baseball player in the early 20th century. Zimmerman played for the Chicago Cubs and New York Giants. He was born and died in New York, New York.

In 1912, Zimmerman led the National League in batting and in home runs, but failed to win the triple crown, as Honus Wagner led the league in RBIs. He was also an important member of the 1908 Cubs, the last Cubs team to win the World Series. Zimmerman was #98 on the "Top 100 Cubs of All Time" list as compiled by the web site Bleed Cubbie Blue.

John Frank "Jack" Fournier (September 28, 1889 – September 5, 1973) was a first baseman in Major League Baseball.

Purchased by the White Sox from the Red Sox in 1912, Fournier presented Clarence "Pants" Rowland, and a half-dozen other managers, with the dilemma of what to do with this inept-fielding pure hitter. Rowland solved that problem in 1916, a year after Fournier had led the AL in slugging, by replacing him at first base with the marginal Jack Ness. Keep in mind that before 1920, a first baseman was one of the key fielding positions because of the constant threat of the bunt. Fournier proved time and time again, that he could simply not field the bunt with any degree of competence. Thus the quick exit from teams despite the fat batting numbers he could put up.

Fournier hit .350 for the Yankees in limited duty in 1918 before they passed him off to the Cardinals. Fournier led NL first basemen with 25 errors in 1920. After three productive years in St. Louis, Fournier was dealt to Brooklyn on February 15, 1923. Fournier said he would quit the game rather than leave St. Louis, but he ended his holdout and reported to the Dodgers. Fournier had found his spot, among an offensive unit that included Zack Wheat, Milt Stock, and Zack Taylor. He turned in a six-for-six performance on June 29 of that year, hit .351, and made a league-high 21 errors. In 1924 Fournier led the NL with 27 HR, and in 1925 was second to Rogers Hornsby with 130 RBI.

He hit 136 career home runs in 14 seasons while rapping .313 with a .393 on-base percentage. He also racked up three straight seasons with 20+ home runs, 20+ doubles, a .400 or higher on-base percentage, a .330 plus batting average, and 90+ runs.

Born in AuSable, Michigan, he played for the Chicago White Sox (1912-1917), New York Yankees, (1918), St. Louis Cardinals, (1920-1922), Brooklyn Robins, (1923-1926), and Boston Braves (1927).

He ranks number 449 on the all-time list of home run leaders.

Best known today as the betrayed manager of the infamous Black Sox, Gleason was a star player of the 1890s. He began as a pitcher with the Phillies. After two losing seasons, he blossomed with a 38-17 mark in 1890 when desertions to the Players' League stripped the Phillies of their regular starters. He never approached that level again, although he twice more topped 20 wins. When the distance from the mound to the plate was increased in 1894, he lost his effectiveness.

About the World Series
The 1919 World Series matched the American League champion Chicago White Sox against the National League champion Cincinnati Reds. Although most World Series have been of the best-of-seven format, the 1919 World Series was a best-of-nine series (along with 1903, 1920, and 1921). Baseball decided to try the best-of-nine format partly to increase popularity of the sport and partly to generate more revenue.

The events of the series are often associated with the Black Sox Scandal, when several members of the Chicago franchise conspired with gamblers to throw World Series games. The 1919 World Series was the last World Series to take place without a Commissioner of Baseball in place. In 1920, the various franchise owners installed Kenesaw Mountain Landis as the first "Commissioner of Baseball."

About the Team

The Chicago White Sox of 1919 were one of baseball's glamour teams. Using very much the same players, they had won the 1917 World Series over the New York Giants in a convincing manner, by four games to two. They had fallen to sixth place in the American League in 1918, largely as a result to losing their best player Shoeless Joe Jackson, along with a few others, to World War I. Team owner Charlie Comiskey fired manager Pants Rowland after the season, replacing him with 20-year Major League veteran Kid Gleason, who was getting his first managerial assignment. The White Sox were back on top of the American League in 1919, finishing with a record of 88-52, 3.5 games in front of the Cleveland Indians.
Joe Jackson

Jackson was the unchallenged star of the team. The left fielder hit .351 that season, fourth in the American League and also finished in the AL's top five in slugging percentage, runs batted in, total bases and base hits. He was not alone on the team, however, as Eddie Collins, one of the greatest second basemen ever, was still going strong in his early 30's, hitting .319 with a .400 on base percentage at the top of the line-up. Right fielder Nemo Leibold was another .300 hitter, hitting .302 while scoring 81 runs, in a line-up that hardly had a weak spot. First baseman Chick Gandil hit .290, third baseman Buck Weaver was at .296, and center fielder Oscar "Happy" Felsch hit .275 while tying with Jackson for the team lead in home runs with 7. Even catcher Ray Schalk, a typical Deadball Era "good field, no hit" catcher, hit .282 that year, and shortstop Swede Risberg was not an automatic out with his .256 average and 38 runs batted in. Manager Gleason even had two good hitters on the bench, outfielder Shano Collins and infielder Fred McMullin, who were both veterans of the 1917 campaign.

On the mound, the White Sox depended on a pair of aces, backed by a very promising rookie. Knuckleballer Eddie Cicotte had become one of the American League's best pitchers after turning 30 and discovering the "shine ball"; he had won 28 games for the 1917 champions, and after an off-year in 1918, had come back with an outstanding 29-7 record, leading the league in Wins and finishing second in Earned Run Average to Walter Johnson. He was backed by Claude "Lefty" Williams, who had posted a 23-11 record with a 2.64 ERA. 26-year old rookie Dickie Kerr only started 17 games but maintained a solid 13-7 record with a 2.88 ERA. The back end of the staff included Urban "Red" Faber, who had beaten the Giants three times in the 1917 World Series but had had an off-year in 1919, finishing 11-9, 3.83 in 20 starts. Unfortunately, Faber was injured and not able to pitch in the Series. This limited Gleason to only three starters in a possible nine games.

All was not well in the White Sox camp, besides. Tensions between many of the players and owner Comiskey were very high, with the players complaining of his penny-pinching ways, which are reflected in two urban legends: the first is that Comiskey instructed Gleason to sit down Cicotte at the end of the year in order that he would not win 30 games, a milestone which would have earned him a sizeable bonus; the second was that the team was known derisively as the Black Sox because Comiskey would not pay to have their uniforms washed regularly.

Born in Harvel, Illinois, Schalk played for the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association before being sold to the Chicago White Sox. He made his major league debut in 1912, playing 23 games behind the plate. He assumed the everyday role of catcher the following year, playing in 129 games, batting .244 and stealing 14 bases. Playing with the White Sox until 1928, Schalk established himself as one of the league's outstanding defensive catchers by leading the league's catchers in fielding percentage eight times and putouts nine times. He also established himself as one of the finest baserunning catchers of all-time, setting a single season stolen base record for the position in 1916 with 30 swipes which stood until John Wathan stole 36 bases in 1982. Schalk played on the 1917 world champion White Sox team and was one of the honest players on the 1919 Black Sox team, hitting .304 for the series. On April 30, 1922, he caught Charlie Robertson's perfect game against Detroit. Two months later, on June 27, Schalk hit for the cycle

Schalk's playing time diminished in 1927 as he assumed the role of manager, which he held into the 1928 season. Over the two seasons, he compiled 102 wins and 125 losses for a .449 winning percentage. Schalk moved to the New York Giants in 1929 but appeared in only 5 games before retiring. He finished his career with a .253 average, 579 runs, 11 home runs, 594 RBI and 177 stolen bases.

Schalk was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955.

George Daniel "Buck" Weaver (August 18, 1890 - January 31, 1956) was an American shortstop and third baseman in Major League Baseball who played his entire career for the Chicago White Sox. He was one of the eight players banned from the Major Leagues for his connection to the 1919 Black Sox Scandal.

An excellent fielder, Weaver was known as the only third baseman in the league that Ty Cobb would not bunt against.

Weaver batted .324 in the 1919 World Series, tallying 11 hits. He played errorless ball in the Series, lending credence to his lifelong claim that he had nothing to do with the fix.

Weaver was banned for having knowledge of the fix and failing to tell team officials. This is somewhat cynical since Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox, had learned of the fix before the World Series began from both Kid Gleason, manager of the White Sox, and Hugh Fullerton, a reporter.

Weaver successfully sued Charles Comiskey for his 1921 salary. When Shoeless Joe Jackson did the same, the jury voted 11-1 in favor of Jackson. However, the judge set aside the jury verdict after Comiskey produced Jackson's grand jury testimony about the fix. The grand jury testimonies of both Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte had been stolen from the office of the Cook County States Attorney so they would not be available for the Black Sox trial. Since Comiskey had these testimonies, an obvious inference is that if the grand jury testimonies implicated Weaver, Comiskey would have used them against Weaver.

Weaver applied six times for reinstatement to baseball before his death from a heart attack on January 31, 1956 at age 65. Weaver was the third of the eight suspended "Black Sox" (after Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1951 and Fred McMullin in 1952) to die.

Many parts of the story portrayed in the movie Eight Men Out are told from Buck Weaver's point of view, with Weaver being played by John Cusack.

Rollie Hubert Zeider (November 16, 1883 - September 12, 1967) was a Major League Baseball infielder (playing over 100 games at all four infield positions in his career) for the Chicago White Sox (1910-1913), New York Yankees (1913), Chicago Chi-Feds/Chicago Whales in the Federal League from 1914-1915, and lastly the Chicago Cubs (1917-1918).

He is one of only a few players to play for three different Chicago teams in his career, and one of two to do it in the 20th century. He is the only person to hit home runs for all three Chicago Major League teams in the twentieth century. Along with Dutch Zwilling he is the only 20th century player to play in the same city in three different Major Leagues (American League (White Sox), Federal League (Chi-Feds/Whales), and the National League (Cubs).

Urban Clarence "Red" Faber (September 6, 1888 - September 25, 1976) was an American right-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball from 1914 until 1933, playing his entire career for the Chicago White Sox. He won 254 games over his twenty-year career, a total which ranked 17th-highest in history upon his retirement. He was also the last legal spitballer in the American League.

Charles August "Swede" Risberg (Reisberg) (13 October 1894 - 13 October 1975) was an American baseball player. He is best known for his involvement in the 1919 Black Sox scandal. Risberg was the assistant to the ringleader of the fix, Chick Gandil.

Risberg debuted on 11 April 1917 at shortstop for the Chicago White Sox. He was a below-average hitter, but due to his superb defensive abilities, he won the full-time job at shortstop, and Buck Weaver was forced to move to third base.

In 1919, Risberg agreed to join a group of White Sox players that planned to intentionally lose the World Series in exchange for monetary payments from a network of gamblers. Risberg received $15,000 for his role in the fix.

For his part in the fix, Risberg, along with seven other players, was made permanently ineligible for Major League Baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

He was one of eight players permanently ineligible for professional baseball for his alleged participation in the Black Sox scandal in the 1919 World Series, in which the favored White Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds in eight games.

Cicotte was a starting pitcher and a knuckleball specialist who won 208 games and lost 149 over the course of a 14-year career pitching for the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, and White Sox. At the time of his lifetime ban, he was considered one of the premier pitchers in the American League.

Raymond William Schalk (August 12, 1892 - May 19, 1970) was a Major League Baseball catcher noted for his fine handling of pitchers and remarkable defensive ability.

Born in Harvel, Illinois, Schalk played for the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association before being sold to the Chicago White Sox. He made his major league debut in 1912, playing 23 games behind the plate. He assumed the everyday role of catcher the following year, playing in 129 games, batting .244 and stealing 14 bases. Playing with the White Sox until 1928, Schalk established himself as one of the league's outstanding defensive catchers by leading the league's catchers in fielding percentage eight times and putouts nine times. He also established himself as one of the finest baserunning catchers of all-time, setting a single season stolen base record for the position in 1916 with 30 swipes which stood until John Wathan stole 36 bases in 1982. Schalk played on the 1917 world champion White Sox team and was one of the honest players on the 1919 Black Sox team, hitting .304 for the series. On April 30, 1922, he caught Charlie Robertson's perfect game against Detroit. Two months later, on June 27, Schalk hit for the cycle

Oscar Emil "Happy" Felsch (August 22, 1891 – August 17, 1964) was an American center fielder in Major League Baseball who played for the Chicago White Sox from 1915 to 1920. He is probably best known for his involvement in the 1919 Black Sox scandal.

Happy Felsch was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He began his baseball career with the minor league Milwaukee Brewers and was eventually sold to the White Sox, making his major league debut on April 14, 1915.

From 1916 to 1920, he was one of the best hitters in the American League, finishing in the top 10 in more than a few major batting categories. His 102 RBI was good enough for second place in 1917.

In 1919, Felsch agreed to join a group of White Sox players that planned to intentionally lose the World Series in exchange for monetary payments from a network of gamblers. Felsch received $5,000 for his role in the fix. There was little doubt of his guilt - he not only hit poorly against the Reds pitchers, but he also misplayed flyballs in key situations.

For his part in the fix, Felsch, along with seven other players, was made permanently ineligible for Major League Baseball by Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. 1920, his last season in the majors, was by far his best. He hit .338 with 14 home runs and 115 RBI, and it is possible that he would have thrived in the lively ball era.

Edward Trowbridge Collins, Sr. (May 2, 1887 – March 25, 1951), nicknamed "Cocky", was an American second baseman, manager and executive in Major League Baseball who played from 1906 to 1930 for the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox. He was the greatest star on the Athletics' "$100,000 infield" which propelled the team to four American League (AL) pennants and three World Series titles between 1910 and 1914, and was named the league's Most Valuable Player in 1914; after that season his contract was sold to the White Sox, and he helped them to capture pennants in 1917 and 1919.

At the end of his career, he ranked second in major league history in career games (2,826), walks (1,499) and stolen bases (744), third in runs scored (1,821), fourth in hits (3,315) and at bats (9,949), sixth in on base percentage (.424), and eighth in total bases (4,268); he was also fourth in AL history in triples (187). He still holds the major league record of 512 career sacrifice hits, over 100 more than any other player. He was the first major leaguer in modern history to steal 80 bases in a season, and still shares the major league record of six steals in a game, which he accomplished twice in September 1912. He regularly batted over .320, retiring with a career average of .333. He also holds major league records for career games (2,650), assists (7,630) and total chances (14,591) at second base, and ranks second in putouts (6,526); his total of 1,215 double plays was a record until Charlie Gehringer passed him in 1938. Under the win shares statistical rating system created by baseball historian and analyst Bill James, Collins was the greatest second baseman of all time.

James Leslie "Hippo" Vaughn (April 9, 1888 - May 29, 1966) was an American left-handed pitcher in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs during the 1910s. He had some good years for the Cubs during a time when they were not always competitive, winning over 20 games in five seasons, including a National League-leading 22 in 1918, when the season was ended a month early due to government restrictions brought about by World War I.

Vaughn was born in Weatherford, Texas. Aside from the unflattering nickname (at 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds, he was only slightly less heavy than 1970s Cubs star Rick Reuschel), he is best remembered for his participation in what the record books used to refer to as a "double no-hitter". On May 2, 1917, at the ballpark now known as Wrigley Field, Vaughn dueled with Fred Toney of the Cincinnati Reds for 9 hitless innings. In the top of the tenth, the Reds scored on a couple of hits after Vaughn had retired the first batter, while Toney continued to hold the Cubs hitless in the bottom of the inning, winning the game for the Reds. With changes to the scoring rules in recent years, this game is no longer considered as a no-hitter for Vaughn; but it is still the only occasion in major league history in which a regulation nine innings was played without either team logging a hit.

Robert Arthur "Bob" O'Farrell (October 19, 1896 – February 20, 1988) was a former major league baseball catcher and manager who played for 21 seasons on four National League teams, including the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and New York Giants. O'Farrell also played for the Cincinnati Reds, albeit briefly. He was considered as one of the greatest defensive catchers of his generation.

O'Farrell was born in Waukegan, Illinois where he grew up a Chicago White Sox fan. He signed with the Cubs in 1915 after playing an exhibition game for his local semi-professional team. His first manager was Roger Bresnahan, who helped O'Farrell with his catching skills. After a season in the bench, O'Farrell was sent to Three-I League where spent two years before advancing to the majors as a backup catcher.

By 1922 he became the starter, where he hit .322 that season. He fractured his skull during a 1924 game while chasing a foul ball on an old mask. He missed most of the season, and lost his job to future Baseball Hall of Famer Gabby Hartnett. He was traded in the start of the 1925 season for Mike Gonzalez and Howard Freigau.

Walt Kuhn caught 17 seasons 1902 to 1918, three in the Major Leagues and 15 in the minors. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I where he suffered the loss of an eye, ending his baseball career. He caught three years with the Chicago White Sox from 1912 to 1914. In 1919 and 1920 he was chief of detectives in Dallas TX, but a chronic illness prevented him from working after that. Believed to be despondent over ill health, he took his own life by shooting himself with a 30-30 rifle at age 51 and is buried at Belmont Memorial Park in Fresno CA.

Roger Philip Bresnahan (June 11, 1879 – December 4, 1944), nicknamed "The Duke of Tralee" for his Irish roots, was an American player in Major League Baseball who starred primarily as a catcher and a player-manager.

Bresnahan played for the Washington Senators (1897), Chicago Orphans/Cubs (1900, 1913-15), Baltimore Orioles (1901-02), New York Giants (1902-08), St. Louis Cardinals (1909-12), and the Cubs again (1913-1915). In 1430 games, he had a batting average of .279 in 4480 at-bats.

Bresnahan had managed the Cardinals while playing for them, and the Cubs in 1915. His overall record was 328-432. He introduced the use of the catcher's shin guard in 1907 and was elected in 1945 to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

He was one of the eight players banned from the Major Leagues for his connection to the 1919 Black Sox Scandal.

An excellent fielder, Weaver was known as the only third baseman in the league that Ty Cobb would not bunt against.

Weaver batted .324 in the 1919 World Series, tallying 11 hits. He played errorless ball in the Series, lending credence to his lifelong claim that he had nothing to do with the fix.

Weaver was banned for having knowledge of the fix and failing to tell team officials. This is somewhat cynical since Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox, had learned of the fix before the World Series began from both Kid Gleason, manager of the White Sox, and Hugh Fullerton, a reporter.

Weaver successfully sued Charles Comiskey for his 1921 salary. When Shoeless Joe Jackson did the same, the jury voted 11-1 in favor of Jackson. However, the judge set aside the jury verdict after Comiskey produced Jackson's grand jury testimony about the fix. The grand jury testimonies of both Joe Jackson and Eddie Cicotte had been stolen from the office of the Cook County States Attorney so they would not be available for the Black Sox trial. Since Comiskey had these testimonies, an obvious inference is that if the grand jury testimonies implicated Weaver, Comiskey would have used them against Weaver.

Weaver applied six times for reinstatement to baseball before his death from a heart attack on January 31, 1956 at age 65. Weaver was the third of the eight suspended "Black Sox" (after Shoeless Joe Jackson in 1951 and Fred McMullin in 1952) to die.

Many parts of the story portrayed in the movie Eight Men Out are told from Buck Weaver's point of view, with Weaver being played by John Cusack.

James Patrick Archer (May 13, 1883 – March 29, 1958) was an Irish-born catcher in Major League Baseball who spent nearly his entire career with four National League teams, primarily the Chicago Cubs, for whom he played from 1909 to 1917. Born in Dublin, he also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1904, the American League's Detroit Tigers in 1907, and the Pirates, Brooklyn Robins and Cincinnati Reds in 1918. As a catcher, he could remain squatting and still throw out runners attempting to steal second base due to his unique arm strength, which became his trademark, acquired from the healing of burns that shortened his muscles after an industrial accident in which Archer fell into a vat of boiling sap at the age of 19.

He was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Edward Marvin "Big Ed" Reulbach (December 1, 1882 – July 17, 1961) was a major league baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs during their Glory Years of the early 1900s.

His best year was 1908, when he won 24 games for the National League and World Series champion Cubs, their last Series win as of the 2007 season.

His single most impressive performance came in the 1906 Series against the cross-town rival Chicago White Sox. In a Series ultimately won in 6 Games by the Pale Hose, Reulbach nonetheless shone in Game 2 at South Side Park, giving up only one hit, a seventh-inning single to George Rohe. This rare World Series low-hit game (there have only been 5 in the 100-plus years of the Series) was matched by fellow Cubs star Claude Passeau in 1945 when he threw just the second one-hitter in Series history.

He pitched two complete game shutouts in one day against the Brooklyn Dodgers on September 26, 1908. No other pitcher has ever accomplished this feat in the major leagues. Reulbach's performance still stands as an achievement that will never be forgotten.

John Francis "Shano" Collins (December 4, 1885 - September 10, 1955) was an American right fielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. In 1910, he played first base for the White Sox, but he was quickly moved to right field, where he would enjoy a reputation for having one of the strongest throwing arms in baseball.

He won a World Series with the Sox in 1917, delivering the game-winning hit in the pennant-clinching game. He batted .286 (6 for 21) in the 1917 World Series, going 3-for-4 in Game 1. In 1918, he set a record with three bases-loaded triples in one game, which would stand alone for 31 years until Elmer Valo tied the mark in 1949. He was traded to the Red Sox in 1921, where he finished his career.

In 1930, he was named manager of the Red Sox, but he only won a total of 73 games in parts of two seasons. He was fired after 55 games in 1931.

As a catcher, he could remain squatting and still throw out runners attempting to steal second base due to his unique arm strength, which became his trademark, acquired from the healing of burns that shortened his muscles after an industrial accident in which Archer fell into a vat of boiling sap at the age of 19.

He was elected to the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990.

Edward Marvin "Big Ed" Reulbach (December 1, 1882 – July 17, 1961) was a major league baseball pitcher for the Chicago Cubs during their Glory Years of the early 1900s.

His best year was 1908, when he won 24 games for the National League and World Series champion Cubs, their last Series win as of the 2008 season.

His single most impressive performance came in the 1906 Series against the cross-town rival Chicago White Sox. In a Series ultimately won in 6 Games by the Pale Hose, Reulbach nonetheless shone in Game 2 at South Side Park, giving up only one hit, a seventh-inning single to George Rohe. This rare World Series low-hit game (there have only been 5 in the 100-plus years of the Series) was matched by fellow Cubs star Claude Passeau in 1945 when he threw just the second one-hitter in Series history.

He pitched two complete game shutouts in one day against the Brooklyn Dodgers on September 26, 1908. No other pitcher has ever accomplished this feat in the major leagues. Reulbach's performance still stands as an achievement that will never be forgotten.

John Joseph Evers (July 21, 1881 – March 28, 1947) was a Major League Baseball player and manager. He was born in Troy, New York. The name originally rhymed with beavers rather than severs, but Evers solemnly came to accept both pronunciations during his life.

Evers, a second baseman, made it to the big leagues with the Chicago Cubs in 1902 and played for the Cubs through 1913, during which time he appeared in three World Series and won two (in 1907 and 1908). One of the smallest men ever to play in the major leagues, Evers reportedly weighed less than 100 pounds (45 kg) when he first broke in, and generally played at a weight under 130 pounds (59 kg). His combative play earned him the nickname "The Crab."

Evers was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1946.

Frederick Francis Mitchell, born Frederick Francis Yapp (June 5, 1878 – October 13, 1970), was an American right-handed pitcher, catcher and manager in Major League Baseball. After pitching for the Boston Red Sox, Philadelphia Athletics, Philadelphia Phillies, and Brooklyn Superbas from 1901 to 1905, he returned to the major leagues as a catcher for the New York Highlanders in 1910. He was noted for relieving Hall of Famer Cy Young in the first-ever Red Sox game.

In 1917, he joined the Chicago Cubs as team president, and was later hired as manager. In his second year at the helm, he won the 1918 National League pennant, losing to the Red Sox in the 1918 World Series. However, in the middle of the 1919 season, he was relieved of his president duties and one year later, he was out of a job. The Boston Braves hired him as manager for the 1921 season, but his success in Chicago did not follow him to his hometown Braves, where he lost 100 games twice. After he was fired by the Braves, he returned to Harvard University where he had previously coached baseball in 1916.

John Kling (February 25, 1875 in Kansas City, Missouri - January 31, 1947 in Kansas City) was a catcher in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs (the Chicago Orphans until 1903) (1900-1908, 1910-1911), Boston Rustlers & Braves (1911-1912), and Cincinnati Reds (1913).

Kling was an exceptional defensive catcher and also had a decent bat. He was a pivotal member of the Cubs dynasty which won four National League pennants and two World Series titles between 1906 and 1910. In early 1909 he won the World Pocket Billiards Championship and stopped playing baseball for the 1909 season to defend that title.

In 1260 games, he batted .271 with 20 home runs and 513 RBIs all-time. He had 1151 hits in 4241 at bats. In August 1902, Kling put together a Major League Baseball record streak of 12 consecutive hits, a feat that wasn't uncovered until 2009. Walt Dropo later tied the mark in 1952.

About Kid Gleason
Best known today as the betrayed manager of the infamous Black Sox, Gleason was a star player of the 1890s. He began as a pitcher with the Phillies. After two losing seasons, he blossomed with a 38-17 mark in 1890 when desertions to the Players' League stripped the Phillies of their regular starters. He never approached that level again, although he twice more topped 20 wins. When the distance from the mound to the plate was increased in 1894, he lost his effectiveness.

Joe Berger was born on Monday, December 20, 1886, in St. Louis, Missouri. Berger was 26 years old when he broke into the big leagues on April 11, 1913, with the Chicago White Sox.

Albert Henry Bridwell (January 4, 1884 in Friendship, Ohio - January 23, 1969 in Portsmouth, Ohio) was an American shortstop in Major League Baseball who played for the a number of teams in the early 20th century, most notably the New York Giants, when the team was managed by John McGraw. Bridwell hit the single which caused the crucial "Merkle boner" running error of the 1908 season against the Chicago Cubs. The error ended up costing the Giants the pennant. He batted left-handed, and threw right-handed.

Leslie Mann (November 18, 1892 in Lincoln, Nebraska - January 14, 1962 in Pasadena, California), was a professional baseball player who played outfield in the Major Leagues from 1913-1928. He would play for the Boston Braves, St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, New York Giants, and Chicago Cubs.

About the History
William Wrigley Jr. (September 30, 1861–January 26, 1932) was a U.S. chewing gum industrialist. He was founder and eponym of the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company in 1891. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Wrigley played an instrumental role in the history of Catalina Island, off the shore of Los Angeles, California. He bought the island in 1919 and improved the island with public utilities, new steamships, a hotel, the Casino building, and extensive plantings of trees, shrubs and flowers. He also sought to create an enterprise which would help employ local residents. By using clay and minerals found on the island in 1927 William Wrigley Jr. created the Pebbly Beach quarry and tile plant, at a beach located near Avalon. Along with creating a job market for Avalon residents, the plant also provided materials for Wrigley's numerous building projects on the island. After the building of Avalon's Casino (see Avalon Theater (Catalina)) in 1929, the Catalina Clay Products Tile and Pottery Plant began churning out handmade glazed tiles, dinnerware and other practical household items such as bookends. Nowadays, Catalina art pottery are highly popular antique collectibles.

However, William Wrigley Jr.'s greatest legacy was his plan for the future of Catalina Island — that it remain protected for all generations to enjoy. His son, P.K. Wrigley, eventually established the Catalina Island Conservancy for this in 1972 and transferred all family ownership to it. Wrigley is honored with the Wrigley Memorial in the Wrigley Botanical Gardens on the island.

Wrigley was also owner of the Chicago Cubs baseball team, which held its annual spring training on Catalina Island. Wrigley Field, the Cubs' ballpark in Chicago, is named for the owner. The now-demolished former home of the Los Angeles Angels of the Pacific Coast League, at that time the Cubs' top farm team, was also called Wrigley Field. He purchased the Chicago Cubs from Albert Lasker in 1925.

The Arizona Biltmore Hotel in Phoenix, Arizona was partially financed, then wholly owned, by Wrigley, who finished the nearby Wrigley Mansion as a winter cottage in 1931. At 16,000 square feet (1,500 m2) it was the smallest of his five residences.

Wrigley left his fortune to daughter Dorothy Wrigley Offield, and son, P.K. Wrigley, who continued to run the company businesses for the next 45 years until his death.

His great-grandson William Wrigley, Jr. II is the executive-chairman and ex CEO of the Wrigley Company. Mr Wrigley, Jr. was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2000.

Harold Homer Chase (February 13, 1883 in Los Gatos, California - May 18, 1947 in Colusa, California), nicknamed "Prince Hal", was a first baseman in Major League Baseball, widely viewed as the best fielder at his position (see below, however). During his career, he played for the New York Highlanders (1905-1913), Chicago White Sox (1913-1914), Buffalo Blues (1914-1915), Cincinnati Reds (1916-1918), and New York Giants (1919).

No lesser figures than Babe Ruth and Walter Johnson named him the best first baseman ever, and contemporary reports describe his glovework as outstanding. He is sometimes considered the first true star of the franchise that would eventually become the New York Yankees. In 1981, 62 years after his last major league game, baseball historians Lawrence Ritter and Donald Honig included him in their book The 100 Greatest Baseball Players of All Time.

Jimmy Lavender (James Sanford Lavender May 26, 1884-January 12, 1960) was a Major League Baseball pitcher. Born in Barnesville, Georgia, the right-hander played with the Chicago Cubs from 1912-1916 and with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1917.

Lavender primarily threw the spitball in his career and used it to win 16 games as a 28 year old rookie in 1912. He would not equal that success again, winning only 10 or 11 games in each of his last four seasons in Chicago.

On July 8, 1912, he started against the New York Giants having pitched 34 consecutive scoreless innings in his previous outings. He pitched a 5-hitter in defeating the Giants 7-2 and ended Rube Marquard's consecutive win streak at 19 games which, at the time, tied the record for the longest streak in baseball history.

Lavender threw a no hitter on August 31, 1915 against the New York Giants and also threw a one-hitter against them on June 14, 1916, allowing only an infield single to Benny Kauff.

Lavender was an inconsistent pitcher with the Cubs, never completing more than half his starts in any season. He was also typically among the National League leaders in allowing the most wild pitches, hit batsmen and home runs.

He was traded to the Phillies in 1917 and pitched one season for them with a 6-8 record before his career ended. His final career record was 63-76 with a 3.09 ERA in 1,207 innings pitched. Lavender may have been most valuable to his teams for his ability to be both a starter and reliever. His ability to fill both roles was important to the small pitching staffs of the dead ball era.

John Francis "Shano" Collins (December 4, 1885 - September 10, 1955) was an American right fielder and first baseman in Major League Baseball for the Chicago White Sox and Boston Red Sox. In 1910, he played first base for the White Sox, but he was quickly moved to right field, where he would enjoy a reputation for having one of the strongest throwing arms in baseball.

He won a World Series with the Sox in 1917, delivering the game-winning hit in the pennant-clinching game. He batted .286 (6 for 21) in the 1917 World Series, going 3-for-4 in Game 1. In 1918, he set a record with three bases-loaded triples in one game, which would stand alone for 31 years until Elmer Valo tied the mark in 1949. He was traded to the Red Sox in 1921, where he finished his career.

In 1930, he was named manager of the Red Sox, but he only won a total of 73 games in parts of two seasons. He was fired after 55 games in 1931.

Tom Needham (April 17, 1879 - December 13, 1926) was a professional baseball player from 1904 to 1914. His first four years, were with the Boston Beaneaters (Later the Boston Braves). Needham hit poorly, Hitting below .200 twice. After a brief appearance with the New York Giants in 1908, Needham played his last 6 years with the Chicago Cubs. Still, Needham hit badly, hitting over .200 just once. Despite hitting under .200 8 of his 11 seasons, Needham's career average was .209, due to his first season average of .260. Needham died in his home in Steubenville, Ohio at the age of 47.

Matthew W. "Matty" McIntyre (June 12, 1880 – April 2, 1920) was an outfielder in Major League Baseball who played ten seasons with the Philadelphia Athletics (1901), Detroit Tigers (1904-10), and Chicago White Sox (1911-12).

He helped the Tigers win the American League Pennant three times, from 1907 to 1909. He led the American League in singles (131), times on base (258), and runs (105) in 1908.

In 1,072 career games, McIntyre batted .269 with 562 runs, 1,066 hits, 140 doubles, 69 triples, 4 home runs, 319 RBI, 120 stolen bases, 439 walks, 1,356 total bases, and 87 sacrifice hits.

Despite his impressive performance on the field, McIntyre may be best remembered as the leader of the "anti-Cobb" clique on the Tigers during Cobb's early years. McIntyre joined the Tigers in 1904 and was a 26-year old starter when 18-year old Cobb joined the team in 1905. Early in Cobb's rookie season, Cobb went after a flyball that was clearly in McIntyre's left field territory. By cutting in front, Cobb caused McIntyre to drop the ball, infuriating McIntyre.

Philip Wiley Taylor (March 18, 1888 - July 8, 1954), was a Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Detroit Tigers (1911), Chicago White Sox (1912), and St. Louis Browns (1913-1914). He played in 27 games (17 as a starter) and had a record of 2-10 in 120-2/3 innings pitched with an earned run average of 4.10. Wiley was born in Wamego, Kansas and died in Westmoreland, Kansas.

Tyrus Raymond "Ty" Cobb (December 18, 1886 – July 17, 1961), nicknamed "The Georgia Peach," was a baseball player and is regarded by historians and journalists as the best player of the dead-ball era and as one of the greatest players of all time. Cobb also received the most votes of any player on the 1936 inaugural Hall of Fame Ballot, receiving 222 out of a possible 226 votes.

Cobb is widely credited with setting 90 Major League Baseball records during his career. He still holds several records as of 2009, including the highest career batting average (.367) and most career batting titles with 11 (or 12, depending on source). He retained many other records for almost a half century or more, including most career hits until 1985 (4,189 or 4,191, depending on source), most career runs (2,245 or 2,246 depending on source) until 2001, most career games played (3,035) and at bats (11,429 or 11,434 depending on source) until 1974, and the modern record for most career stolen bases (892) until 1977.

Cobb's legacy as an athlete has sometimes been overshadowed by his surly temperament and aggressive playing style, which was described by the Detroit Free Press as "daring to the point of dementia." During Cobb's playing days, numbers on uniforms had not been introduced yet, and so he is not identified with any particular number, as some other players are.

George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), also popularly known as "Babe", "The Bambino", and "The Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth is one of the greatest sports heroes of American culture. He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the "Roaring Twenties".

He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), a record which stood for 34 years until broken by Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 was a record for 39 years, until broken by Hank Aaron in 1974. Unlike many power hitters, Ruth also hit for average: his .342 lifetime batting is tenth highest in baseball history, and in one season (1923) he hit .393, a Yankee record. His .690 career slugging percentage and 1,164 career on-base plus slugging (OPS) remain the major league records.

Ruth dominated in the era in which he played. He led the league in home runs during a season 12 times, slugging percentage 13 times, OPS 13 times, runs scored eight times, and runs batted in (RBIs) six times. Each of those totals represents a modern record (and also an all-time record, except for RBIs). At the time of his retirement, his 714 home runs were not only the record, but that total was 336 more than the next player, Lou Gehrig. He also finished with the most career walks (2,062), most career extra base hits (1,356), and he is still the only player to have a season with at least 200 hits and 150 walks.

In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth Number 1 on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." In 1999, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

George Herman Ruth, Jr. (February 6, 1895 – August 16, 1948), also popularly known as "Babe", "The Bambino", and "The Sultan of Swat", was an American Major League baseball player from 1914–1935. Ruth is one of the greatest sports heroes of American culture. He has been named the greatest baseball player in history in various surveys and rankings, and his home run hitting prowess and charismatic personality made him a larger than life figure in the "Roaring Twenties".

He was the first player to hit 60 home runs in one season (1927), a record which stood for 34 years until broken by Roger Maris in 1961. Ruth's lifetime total of 714 home runs at his retirement in 1935 was a record for 39 years, until broken by Hank Aaron in 1974. Unlike many power hitters, Ruth also hit for average: his .342 lifetime batting is tenth highest in baseball history, and in one season (1923) he hit .393, a Yankee record. His .690 career slugging percentage and 1,164 career on-base plus slugging (OPS) remain the major league records.

Ruth dominated in the era in which he played. He led the league in home runs during a season 12 times, slugging percentage 13 times, OPS 13 times, runs scored eight times, and runs batted in (RBIs) six times. Each of those totals represents a modern record (and also an all-time record, except for RBIs). At the time of his retirement, his 714 home runs were not only the record, but that total was 336 more than the next player, Lou Gehrig. He also finished with the most career walks (2,062), most career extra base hits (1,356), and he is still the only player to have a season with at least 200 hits and 150 walks.

In 1936, Ruth became one of the first five players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1969, he was named baseball's Greatest Player Ever in a ballot commemorating the 100th anniversary of professional baseball. In 1998, The Sporting News ranked Ruth Number 1 on the list of "Baseball's 100 Greatest Players." In 1999, baseball fans named Ruth to the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.

Mathewson and Brown wrapped their respective careers by squaring off on September 4, 1916. The game was billed as the final meeting between the two old baseball warriors. The high-scoring game was a win for Mathewson's Reds over Brown's Cubs.

Jacob Ellsworth Daubert (April 7, 1884 - October 9, 1924) was an American first baseman in Major League Baseball who played for the Brooklyn Superbas and Cincinnati Reds. His career lasted from 1910 until his death in 1924.

Daubert was recognized throughout his career for his performances on the field. He won the 1913 and 1914 batting titles, as well as the 1913 Chalmers Award. Between 1911 and 1919, The Baseball Magazine named him to their All-American team seven times.

Edd J. Roush (May 8, 1893 - March 21, 1988) was a left-handed Major League Baseball player. He played the majority of his career in center field.

Roush made his major league debut on August 20, 1913 for the Chicago White Sox. He switched to the fledgling Federal League in 1914 and spent two seasons with the Indianapolis Hoosiers, who became the Newark Pepper in 1915. In 1916, he split the season between the New York Giants and the Cincinnati Reds.

With the Reds from 1917 to 1926, Roush never batted below .321 and was an instrumental part of the team's World Series championship in 1919. He won the batting title in 1917 and 1919. His best career year in batting average was 1921, when he batted .352. He also led the leagues in Slugging average (.455) in 1918, in Doubles (41) in 1923, and in Triples (21) in 1924. He was renowned as having the best arm of any outfielder in his era. He held out most of the 1922 season over a salary dispute.

Roush played for the New York Giants again from 1927 until 1929 and rejoined the Cincinnati Reds for a single season in 1931 before retiring. He sat out the 1930 season over a salary dispute.

Lewis Albert Fonseca (January 21, 1899 - November 26, 1989) was an American first and second baseman in Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and Chicago White Sox over a 12-year career. While not a power hitter, he did manage to hit for average and was a good contact hitter for most of his career. He topped the .300 mark six times, with his best season coming in 1929 with the Indians, when he hit .369 to win the American League batting title. What made it remarkable was that he was coming off a 1928 season in which he broke his leg. Unfortunately, his success was short-lived, as he broke his arm in 1930, and a torn ligament in his leg ended his playing career prematurely.

Fonseca is perhaps best known as one of the first men to use film in analyzing baseball games and finding flaws in players. It is said that his interest with cameras began while shooting Slide, Kelly, Slide in 1927. As manager of the Chicago White Sox, he used film extensively. After retiring from playing the game, he was director of promotions for both leagues.
